Hell's Gate is Kenya's most active national park — not in the wildlife sense, but in the most literal sense. You walk here. Or cycle. Or rappel into the gorge on a rope. The park is one of only two in Kenya where visitors are allowed to walk and cycle freely among the wildlife — zebra, giraffe, buffalo and kongoni graze around you as you move through on foot.
The Fischer Tower volcanic plugs rise against the sky like a scene from another planet. The gorge itself — carved by millennia of geothermal activity — descends through walls of polished rock into chambers lit by distant shafts of light. A geothermal spa evening completes the experience.
Depart Nairobi west to Hell's Gate. Morning cycling through the park's main circuit — giraffe graze at roadside level, zebra move past unhurried, the Fischer and Central towers rise dramatically above the plain. Afternoon: the gorge descent with an experienced guide. Rope rappel into the lower gorge. Emerge for a sunset boat ride on Lake Naivasha. Geothermal spa evening at your lodge.
Morning hike on the upper gorge trail for views across the Rift Valley. Final coffee on the lodge terrace with Longonot volcano visible across the valley. Return to Nairobi by midday.
