Where Lava Flows Meet Elephant Legends

Tsavo is Kenya at its most primal. Kenya's largest protected wilderness — divided into Tsavo East and West — holds more elephants than any other park on earth. These are the famous 'red elephants,' their grey hides stained volcanic ochre by the iron-rich dust they bathe in daily.

This is raw Africa. Less visited than the Mara, Tsavo rewards those who seek solitude, scale and silence. Ancient lava flows stretch to the horizon. The underground river of Mzima Springs teems with hippos and crocodiles visible through a glass observation chamber beneath the water's surface.

Your Itinerary

Day 01

Nairobi Tsavo West

Road or charter · Tsavo West National Park

Depart Nairobi southeast by private 4x4, following the Mombasa highway before turning into Tsavo. The first encounter with Tsavo's landscape is unforgettable — volcanic hills, vast open plains, and already the red-stained elephants moving in the distance.

Day 02

Tsavo West: Mzima Springs & Chaimu

Mzima Springs · Chaimu Crater

Morning visit to Mzima Springs — one of Kenya's great natural wonders. Crystal-clear water bubbles up from underground Kilimanjaro snowmelt. An underwater viewing chamber allows you to observe hippos underwater. Afternoon: hike Chaimu Crater.

Day 03

Full Tsavo West Game Day

Tsavo West National Park

A full day exploring Tsavo West's diverse habitats — from the Ngulia rhino sanctuary to the open volcanic plains rich with lion, cheetah, and large buffalo herds. The Roaring Rocks viewpoint at sunset offers one of Kenya's most dramatic vistas.

Day 04

Tsavo West Tsavo East

Cross-park · Galana River

Cross into Tsavo East — flatter, drier, and wilder. The Galana River is the lifeline of the east. Lugard Falls, where the Galana River compresses into a narrow gorge of polished rock, is a geological spectacle unlike anything in Kenya.

Day 05

Final Tsavo East Nairobi

Tsavo East · Return journey

Dawn game drive in Tsavo East as elephant herds move to the river. Breakfast at camp. Return journey to Nairobi via the Mombasa highway.
