The north is where Kenya reveals its most untamed self. Samburu National Reserve, straddling the Ewaso Ng'iro river in Kenya's arid north, is home to five endemic species found nowhere else on earth — the 'Samburu Five' — alongside lion, elephant, leopard, and cheetah.
The landscape here is unlike anything in the south: doum palms lining the riverbanks, burned umber hills, and a quality of silence that is almost physical. The lodge camps sit directly on the river, with hippos visible from the dining terrace and elephants crossing at dusk directly below.
Charter flight from Wilson Airport to Samburu airstrip (45 minutes), or private road transfer through Nanyuki and the foothills of Mount Kenya. Arrival at your riverside tented camp — elephants may well be crossing the river as you check in. Afternoon game drive focusing on the Samburu Five.
Dawn game drives reveal the reserve at its most extraordinary. The gerenuk — the giraffe gazelle — browsing on its hind legs from acacia branches. Grevy's zebra in their bold, narrow-striped coats. Reticulated giraffe moving in slow-motion grace through the scrub.
Morning game drive followed by a visit to a traditional Samburu village. The afternoon is spent at leisure at camp: the hammock strung between doum palms above the river.
A last unhurried morning drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro — lion are frequently seen resting in the riverine trees. Breakfast at camp, then charter or road return to Nairobi.
