Kenya's Indian Ocean coast is one of the world's great family beach destinations — and almost entirely unknown to the families who would love it most. The water is warm and calm behind the reef, the sand is white coral, and the Swahili culture is one of the most child-friendly in Africa.
The Family Coast Discovery takes you to Diani Beach for four nights of genuine family leisure — snorkelling over coral gardens with sea turtles, dhow sailing, a visit to the Shimba Hills for elephant and sable antelope, and the pleasurable discovery that your children can be happily occupied by a beach and a bucket for entire days at a time.
Charter flight from Nairobi to Mombasa (1 hour), then private road transfer 30km south to Diani Beach. The children see the Indian Ocean for the first time from the transfer vehicle. Check in to your family beach villa — the ocean is immediately accessible through the garden.
Morning boat excursion to Kisite Marine Park — one of East Africa's most pristine marine environments. Children snorkel over coral gardens for the first time: sea turtles grazing on sea grass, parrotfish in technicolour, starfish on the sandy bottom. The spinner dolphins bow-ride the boat.
Morning excursion to Shimba Hills — Kenya's coastal forest reserve and one of the few places on earth where the rare sable antelope lives. Elephant herds move through the forest. A guided nature walk through the forest with a ranger — children collect seeds, identify trees, and spot colobus monkeys overhead.
Morning family dhow sailing trip along the reef. The traditional lateen sail, the warm sea breeze, and the crew who let the children hold the ropes. Afternoon is the purest family beach day — buckets, spades, sandcastles, and the Indian Ocean.
Final morning at the beach. The children's feet are sandy for the last time. Transfer to Mombasa for charter or road return to Nairobi.
